Music Education – Class of 2027
My name is Jaret Snyder, and I am a third-year student at Ohio University majoring in Music Education. My primary instrument is the alto saxophone! At OU, I am a School of Music Ambassador, Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, member of NAfME, and am part of the Marching 110, Wind Symphony, and the OU Saxophone Quartet. While I am proud of the experiences I have accrued thus far, I am excitedly anticipating future educational opportunities to broaden my experiences.
I believe that music can guide today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leaders, which is something the human race has never needed more than right now. As a music educator, my ultimate goal is to use music as a medium to connect with students for the development of their character. While yes, making music beautifully is very important and is something I am very passionate about, my highest priority is to ensure that my students are growing to become well-rounded, positive, and productive members of society. The purpose of music education is to foster an environment where students can grow their interpersonal and social emotional skills. Personally, I chose to become a music educator to share with students how music can impact and change a life. I want other people to experience music the way that I have been impacted by it. Through active participation in musical ensembles, study of solo repertoire, and the collaboration of chamber music, the stage can be perfectly set to facilitate the growth of teamwork, multitasking, and self-discipline skills through the making of music. I intend to host my band room as a safe space, one where students of all backgrounds, cultures, and identities can feel secure and free of judgment. It is my goal that students will feel welcome and at home inside of the band room when engaging in academically motivated musical concepts. In terms of musical curriculum, an emphasis on history and fundamental study will be applied rigorously. Applying historical context to any work of music creates a sense of meaning and purpose, giving students a rationale for their musical performance in real time. Implementing a routine where technique, intonation, and musicality are prioritized during constant fundamental study will cause a good ensemble to become a great ensemble, while simultaneously delivering students a masterclass in subconscious development of their character because of the aforementioned meticulous study.

My current career goals as a music educator entail becoming a high school or middle school band director and nurturing students into well-rounded musicians and human beings. Through music, I hope to develop today’s youth into the future of tomorrow. For me, I will feel successful when I see my students being successful, whether that is musically or personally, as they grow into confident, compassionate, and driven individuals. Five years after graduation, I see myself as a head or assistant band director who has taken charge to cultivate growth from his students and hosts a judgement-free environment where all identities are welcome.
