Music Education – Class of 2027
My name is Jaret Snyder, and I am a third-year student at Ohio University majoring in Music Education. My primary instrument is the alto saxophone! At OU, I am a School of Music Ambassador, Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, Treasurer for NAfME, and am part of the Marching 110, Symphonic Band, and the OU Saxophone Quartet. While I am proud of the experiences I have accrued thus far, I am excitedly anticipating future educational opportunities to broaden my experiences.
As a music educator, my goal is to use music as a medium to connect with students for the development of their character. While yes, music is important and I am very passionate about it, my highest priority is to ensure that my students are growing to become well-rounded, positive, and productive members of society. Active participation in a musical ensemble sets the stage perfectly to facilitate the growth of teamwork, multitasking, and self-discipline skills through the making of music. I intend to host my band room as a safe space, one where students of all backgrounds, cultures, and identities can feel secure and free of judgment. It is my hope that students feel welcome in the band room when engaging in academically motivated musical activities. In terms of musical curriculum, an emphasis on history and fundamental concepts will be applied. With these two fields brought to the forefront, my students will learn to understand the historical implications of the music being studied and expand their musicianship capabilities.

My current career goals as a music educator entail becoming a high school or middle school band director and nurturing students into well-rounded musicians and human beings. Through music, I hope to develop today’s youth into the future of tomorrow. For me, I will feel successful when I see my students being successful, whether that is musically or personally, as they grow into confident, compassionate, and driven individuals. Five years after graduation, I see myself as a head or assistant band director who has taken charge to cultivate growth from his students and hosts a judgement-free environment where all identities are welcome.
